This course equips prevention specialists and mental health providers with trauma-informed facilitation skills. It delves into trauma's impact on behavior, emphasizing safety, trust, and cultural humility. Through case studies, attendees learn to recognize triggers and respond empathetically. Practical strategies are provided for creating trauma-informed environments, including boundary setting and language use. The course addresses trauma's intersectionality and systemic barriers, fostering inclusivity. Participants gain tools to prioritize trauma-informed principles in interventions, promoting resilience and avoiding re-traumatization. Overall, professionals enhance their ability to support individuals and communities on the path to healing and resilience.

Participants will:

  • Develop a thorough understanding of trauma-informed care principles, including recognition of trauma responses and triggers.
  • Acquire practical skills in creating safe and supportive environments, integrating trauma-sensitive language, and fostering empowerment in facilitation practices.
  • Explore the intersectionality of trauma and social determinants, enhancing cultural humility and addressing systemic barriers to equity, while promoting resilience and recovery.

Guest Speakers:

Dr. Mark Loftis Dr. Mark Loftis is a Professor and the Clinical Mental and School Counseling Program Coordinator in the Department of Counseling and Psychology at Tennessee Tech University. Dr. Loftis is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Mental Health Service Provider, Senior Psychological Examiner, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Board Qualified Supervisor, and Master Addiction Counselor. Dr. Loftis received a Ph.D. in Clinical Counseling from Trevecca Nazarene University. He graduated from Tennessee Tech University with master's and bachelor's degrees in counseling and psychology. He also obtained a master's in Biblical Studies from Lipscomb University. Dr. Loftis currently serves on the Tennessee licensing state board for Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors, and previously the Governor appointed him to the board for licensed psychologists. He has been a mental health service provider in the Upper Cumberland for over 35 years. Dr. Tony Michael Dr. Tony Michael is an Associate Professor and the Ph.D. in Counseling and Supervision Program Coordinator in the Department of Counseling and Psychology at Tennessee Tech University. Dr. Michael is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Mental Health Service Provider and Board Qualified Supervisor in Tennessee. Before moving to Tennessee, Dr. Michael was a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas and Mississippi. In addition, he holds national certifications as an Approved Clinical Supervisor, Registered Play Therapist and Play Therapist Supervisor, and National Certified Counselor. In terms of education, he received a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from The University of Mississippi. He also attended Dallas Theological Seminary, where he achieved a Master of Arts in Counseling, and Georgia State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Social Work. Dr. Michael has worked in the mental health field for 20 years, with the last 9 years in the Upper Cumberland.
